Today’s Goodwill®  stores are attractive, modern retail facilities that function as part of an extensive, full-line discount retail operation, with a special emphasis on clothing. Private individuals, manufacturers and other retailers donate quality, brand-name merchandise to Goodwill. Spring’s Here — Time to #SpringClear!

Every year as the weather gets nicer, you clean out your closet to make way for summer. This year, why not give away items you no longer want or need and get something in return?

This spring, Horizon Goodwill is running a spring-cleaning social media contest, and we want YOU to participate. All you have to do is submit your de-clutter before and after pictures for a chance to win one of three prizes. Here’s how you can enter.

  1. Between now and April 21, submit a pre- and post-clutter photo (anything from your closet to your garage) with the hashtag #SpringClear on our Facebook page or via Twitter.
  2. After the submission deadline, our marketing team will compile all submissions and select three winners based on number of likes, shares, retweets, and how well each contestant de-clutters his/her space.
  3. In addition to the following prizes, each winner will walk away with a Clutter Diet book written by our spokesperson Lorie Marrero.
    1. First prizewinner will receive a gift certificate for $100 to any Horizon Goodwill retail location.
    2. Second prizewinner will receive a gift certificate for $50 to any Horizon Goodwill retail location.
    3. Third prizewinner will receive a gift certificate for $25 to any Horizon Goodwill retail location.
    4. Donate your unwanted items to one of our Horizon Goodwill locations.

  1. Goodwill Industries was founded in 1902 by Reverend Edgar J. Helms. What started as a small organization in Boston’s South End to give people hope, dignity and independence has since grown to a network of 165 independent, community-based Goodwills in the U.S. and Canada. Horizon Goodwill Industries became the 100th Goodwill® franchise in the country.
  2. We’re more than the sum of our stores. Our shopping locations serve a much greater purpose than thrilling discount shoppers hunting for deals. By donating and shopping at Goodwill, you help us help others with barrier to employment.
  3. Every 45 seconds of every business day, a person served by Goodwill earns a job. Last year alone, Goodwill Organizations helped 216,000 people earn a job!

Ideas for Throwing a Thrifty St. Patrick’s Day Party

You don’t need the luck of the Irish to throw a fun and festive St. Patrick’s Day party. All you need is a little inspiration, some creativity, and help from your local Horizon Goodwill Industries store. Inspired by items you can find at any of our locations, here are five DIY projects for your St. Patrick’s Day party.

1. Transform your table with a DIY, St. Patrick’s Day inspired centerpiece. Find a few vases, candy dishes and doilies (don’t worry if they’re not green. You can always dye them with food coloring) from your local Goodwill®. Fill with rainbow-colored candies and “gold coins” and wait for the leprechauns to arrive.

2. Irish or not, your guests will love celebrating this lucky day with festive party favors. Stock up on clear glassware or mason jars at Goodwill and create your own St. Patrick’s Day cups. Simply apply green and gold polka-dot decals or St. Patrick’s Day stickers directly to the glasses. Cheers!

3. Since you have those glasses ready, why not give your guests something tasty to fill them with? Make a delicious leprechaun shake by blending 1 cup milk, 2 scoops frozen yogurt, ½ teaspoon peppermint extract and 4 drops green food coloring.

4. Throwing a St. Patrick’s Day party for the kids? Here’s a crafty idea they’ll love. Buy a few small planters at Goodwill and paint them black. Fill with “gold coins” or chocolate cased in gold wrappers, and top with colored pipe cleaners (the rainbow). These little pots of gold make great party favors or a fun activity during the party.

At Horizon Goodwill Industries, we believe when an individual has a job, his/her life works. While a major part of our core services include helping individuals with disabilities or other barriers find a job, we also match employers with skilled workers to grow their businesses. In addition, we provide encouragement, support and assistance once our clients enter the world of work, and we urge all employers to do the same.

As a business owner, supervisor or manager, you know it takes hard work and commitment from every employee for your business to succeed. Each individual you hire can make or break your company. Throughout this month, we encourage all employers, large and small, to take steps to ensure your employees enjoy working for you, remain inspired to be productive and feel valued on your team.

 

Here are 10 ways you can boost morale and encourage a happy, healthy working environment at your office. 

  1. Set a good example: Stick to your word, maintain a positive attitude, and be approachable at all times.
  2. Let your employees know how they are doing. Congratulate and recognize them when they’ve completed a project well. Likewise, provide feedback and suggestions on how to improve if you’re disappointed in their work.
  3. Celebrate special milestones, events, and accomplishments in the lives of your employees: birthdays, engagements, weddings, births, and anniversaries.
  4. Listen to your employees. Paying close attention to their needs, issues and personal stories shows respect, support, and trust.
  5. Communicate clearly, frequently and in person. This ensures everyone is on the same page and keeps your employees in the loop as much as possible.

Vocational Services Horizon Goodwill Industries Offers

At Horizon Goodwill Industries, we understand the challenges and concerns faced daily by people with barriers to work. We assist many people with disabilities or medical conditions who need support to find and maintain employment. Others seeking services have limited education and work experience, a criminal record, a history of substance abuse, or have lost their jobs due to changes in the economy.

Our programs and services offer help and hope for those who want to work. Every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to noon, we offer an Open Enrollment program to help people look for jobs. Each participant’s service needs are different, but Horizon Goodwill offers a number of job training programs to guide you in changing your life. Our vocational services include:

1. Career Planning & Assessment

Find out what you enjoy, what your skills and abilities are, and what strengths you have that can help you in a work environment. Learn more about you in relation to defining or changing your career path.

2. Work Experience

We offer paid and unpaid work training to prepare you for competitive employment. Build and practice work skills and habits in real work environments that make you more employable. Classroom training assists you to develop behaviors and motivation. It provides you with information related to community referrals and ongoing support resources, including case management and benefits counseling.

3. Job Readiness Training

We offer group training sessions, peer support, and individual instruction for job seekers to help develop the motivation, skills, materials, and linkages needed to secure a job and stay employed. We are here to assist you to develop networks and job leads, create resumes that get attention, learn useful techniques to complete job applications and practice interviewing skills.

4. Job Placement

We offer assistance with finding employment. This helps with job development, job searching, job matching, and job placement. We will maintain contact with you after placement to ensure job satisfaction. When entering this program, you should have an established work history, identified career goals, and be prepared to work in a competitive setting.

5. Job Resource Center

Utilize our computers, phone, and fax as well as job listings and online assessments and training to explore your career options. Carry out your job search, create and post your resume, and fill out job applications. Create your cover letters, thank you letters to potential employers, and other job-related documents to help you secure employment. Reference materials and staff assistance are available to assist with these tasks.

6. Post-Employment Support

We offer job coaching, job retention services, and/or participation in peer support group activities and committees to help you adjust to a new work routine, learn new job duties, plan and manage your finances, and resolve work, social and family issues to promote your success on the job and to enhance your career prospects.
