Look, I know it’s only the middle of the July, but where’s the harm in a dad looking forward to just a month or so of things going back to normal?  It’s not like the majority of us get to take off what is arguably the best part of the year; getting away from our computer screens and cramped desks,  initiating water balloon fights, selling lemonade on the corner for pocket change and sleeping in after a full night of the Disney Channel, right? Ok, sorry if I sound a bit jaded, but I miss the days of my youth with limited obligations, ice cream sandwiches and afternoons spent playing wiffle ball. Attention fellow thrifters! We classify thrifting as an art; you must have a good eye and a key sense of fashion to find a fabulous diamond in the rough. Goodwill’s racks and shelves are packed with treasures so we decided to give ourselves a challenge. We went searching for the celebrity looks below at various Horizon Goodwill retail stores to find “celebrity looks-for-less” at an even “thriftier” price than what is listed in those fashion magazines. We had so much fun putting these looks together! We live for a good deal and an exciting treasure hunt. Goodwill is always full of great surprises that are both unique and thrifty! It’s Never Too Late To Become Independent

Hey Readers! Can you believe this weekend is already July 4th? I guess it’s true what they say—the older you get the faster time passes.  At this rate we’ll be talking about ringing in the New Year in a week or two! I remember when I was in my late teens, a year felt like, well, a year. I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I figured I had enough time to come up with something. As you may recall from previous posts, I ended up taking a job in college at the local movie theater that earned me just enough to help pay rent, buy a few text books and to eat three square meals of fast food, pizza and ramen noodles a day. I thought I was on top of the world, making enough money to scrape by every month, confident in the knowledge that I was in charge of my life. Horizon Goodwill Industries announces their new Executive Director. Mr. John N. McCain has been appointed Executive Director and CEO of this impactful non-profit serving the four-state region.

After a nationwide search for a leader who combines a passion for the Goodwill Mission with the skills for leadership, stewardship, and service, Mr. McCain was chosen by the Board of Directors from over 100 qualified applicants.

In his thirteen years as the Chief Operating Officer of Goodwill Easter Seals of the Gulf Coast in Mobile, AL, Mr. McCain had operational responsibility for Accounting, Finance, Donated Goods Retail, Fundraising, Business Services, and Human Resources. Additionally, he had overall responsibility for Strategic Planning and Risk Management for that organization.

“I am very excited by the opportunity to continue and expand upon the great work of Horizon Goodwill Industries. HGI has been and will continue to be pivotal in helping individuals with disabilities and barriers to employment become more self-sufficient. The dedication of the Board of Directors and the support from the community, as well as the professionalism of the staff, will lead Horizon Goodwill to serve more people in more ways in the future.”, said McCain.

Mr. McCain is a native of Pensacola, FL and has lived most of his life along the Gulf Coast. He received his B.S. in Accounting from the University of South Alabama and his M.B.A. from Spring Hill College. He is also a 2010 graduate of the Goodwill Industries International Executive Development program. Prior to joining Goodwill Easter Seals, he worked as a staff accountant for a CPA firm and as a controller for a distribution company.

Hello again, readers! How was your Father’s Day weekend? See, I believe the holiday should be celebrated over the course of three days, not just on the traditional Sunday. Ask any dad and I think they would agree, it’s not too much to ask to chill out Friday evening through bedtime on Sunday once a year, is it?  That was my plan, and I made it known to anyone in my household who would listen! Learn More About The Second Chance Act: An Interview With Attorney Rodney Rose

Last week I was very happy to write about The Second Chance Act, legislation that offers non-violent offenders the opportunity to have their criminal record expunged in order to help them find gainful employment. I have to say, this ground-breaking bill can literally change lives—and already has—which is what Horizon Goodwill is all about! Recently, I had the opportunity to discuss the details of The Second Chance Act with Attorney Rodney Rose, Horizon Goodwill Industries’ Director of Regulatory Compliance and In-House Council, who actually helped write new verbiage to be added later this year within the existing bill.
