Life can be exhilarating, overwhelming, breathtaking, difficult, rewarding, frustrating and complicated, often all at the same time! Everyone on this planet, regardless of their race, religion, career or gender will experience a life full of highs and lows in this always-unpredictable world. I’ll let you in on a little secret—I wouldn’t want it any other way!
Call me an optimist, but I look forward to what life throws at me. Even when my wife and I experience the occasional frustration that comes with being parents, I always step back and remind her “Do you know how boring it would be if our children never gave us any grief?” I’ve always held the belief that how we overcome life’s daily obstacles is what really molds us into the unique individuals we eventually become.
Back in 1988, I was a bright-eyed college freshman without a real care in the world. I dreamed of one day becoming a writer, but for the time being I was content working for minimum wage as a movie theater usher. Two decades later I realized that I had somehow ended up responsible for the daily operations of multiple theaters in several states. Not bad for a kid from rural Pennsylvania…until the bottom fell out.
The exhibition industry went through some serious changes and thousands of screens nationwide went dark, unable to keep up with Hollywood’s demand for new equipment. I quickly found myself unemployed with over 20 years of specialized experience that didn’t really bode well on the open job market. It was time to look in the mirror. I was forced into some serious soul searching. Where I was supposed to go from here? My career just stopped, but the world kept turning: I had a mortgage that still needed paid, a family to feed and more stress than I had ever experienced in my life. Fortunately, as these things often do, it eventually worked out. I wish I could say the same about my former colleagues as many of them are still struggling to find gainful employment.
Of course now, writing for Horizon Goodwill, I realize valuable career resources are available. Like many of the public at large, I wasn’t aware Goodwill Industries® offered more than convenient donation centers and retail locations. Through their Career Development Services they also provide job training to those with barriers to employment.
