Coffee is one of life’s simple pleasures I just can’t do without. That’s what was going through my mind Sunday morning as I waited for that delicious, caffeinated wonder to brew, tapping my fingers on the kitchen counter, staring as each excruciating drip fell ever so slowly into my mug. Maybe we should finally purchase one of those super fast brewers that make one cup at a time, but super quick for impatient guys like me—“Yes, of course you can all come for Thanksgiving!” Missy’s excited voice snapped me out of my post sleep haze. Back To School Is A Great Time To Get Organized

Hey Readers! Summer’s not officially over yet, but it might as well be at my house. School’s back in session and the Mrs. and I are attempting to get Kaitlyn back on schedule—no easy task for a third grade girl who’s been playing from sunup to sundown for three months! Add to this the fact that one of our adult children, Connor, has decided to come and visit from Pittsburgh “indefinitely” and suddenly our three person household is now four…plus his dog Marshall.  We’re running out of space, but, as always, my wife had a plan. Hello again, readers! How was your Father’s Day weekend? See, I believe the holiday should be celebrated over the course of three days, not just on the traditional Sunday. Ask any dad and I think they would agree, it’s not too much to ask to chill out Friday evening through bedtime on Sunday once a year, is it?  That was my plan, and I made it known to anyone in my household who would listen! My Pittsburgh Pirates were playing a weekend series against my newly adopted second favorite team the Washington Nationals, and I had intentions of watching every single pitch.  My wife, however, had other plans. Celebrating Earth Day Might Benefit Me More Than Anyone Else!

I’m that guy, you know the one. For some reason I have a mental block when it comes to remembering special dates, everything from birthdays to anniversaries. I can’t explain it, I’m just missing something in my DNA when it comes to recalling things like that. My wife is just amazed by this, as she’s quick to point out I can recite the entire starting lineup for the 1979 World Series Pittsburgh Pirates, but for some reason, I can’t remember when my daughter was born. I mean, I know her birthday is at the end of January, but that’s one of those tricky months with 31 days in it…or is it 30?

Anyway, I consider myself fortunate when, every April, I turn on the television and see a piece about Earth Day. Yes, I like to think of myself as the type of person that does his part to keep his carbon footprint to a minimum, and I separate my recyclables every week, but I must admit I have an ulterior motive for looking forward to Earth Day. I’m guilty. I love reality television. Let me clarify—I love certain types of reality programing. I can’t, however, watch nearly 99% of it. I simply don’t care about a rich guy trying to find his next wife, what restaurant needs turned around and I could very happily live my life not “Keeping Up With The Housewives of Duluth, Iowa”. As if the inclement weather isn’t enough to just ruin your day, you’ve just received your W-2 forms from your employer. Yes….Tax Time is here once again. Maybe some of you actually look forward to this time of year, anxious and eager to gather last year’s records, sharpen your Number 2 pencils, blow dust off that adding machine you’ve had since 1992 and get started with the number crunching.

For most of us, however, it’s a painful chore to itemize deductions, download Turbo Tax or schedule an appointment with H& R Block, only to discover you owe the IRS even more of your hard-earned dough.
