Thank you to everyone who participated in our “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour Concert Ticket Sweepstakes”. The entering donors provided Horizon Goodwill Industries (HGI) with the raw materials to generate at least 690 hours of paid on-the-job training and other programs for individuals with barriers to employment. At HGI, 90% of all revenue generated goes directly into programs and services to help people with barriers to employment find and keep good jobs.
In April of this year, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter announced that she was lending her voice to help raise awareness about Goodwill’s mission of transforming lives through the power of work. Horizon Goodwill Industries’ Mrs. Carter Show World Tour Concert Ticket Sweepstakes drew hundreds of donors to our donation centers.
“Goodwill helps people get back to work by providing education, job training and placement. I wanted to team up with an organization that puts people first and works every day to help them improve and re-establish their lives,” said Beyoncé.
Our concert ticket winners will enjoy Beyoncé at the Verizon Center on Monday July 29th. Our Grand Prize winner of floor tickets for two and limousine service for the event is Mrs. Paula Eschenfelder. She donated at our Romney, WV Goodwill Retail Store. Our First Prize winner of two Upper Concourse tickets is Tony Fletcher who donated at our Greencastle, PA Goodwill Retail Store.

Robert joined the Army in 1977 and served honorably for 4 years. Upon discharge he battled with severe alcoholism, homelessness, no job and no transportation with little hope in sight. This landed him at the Washington DC VA Medical Center, but there were no inpatient programs available for him, so he was transported to Martinsburg, WV VA Medical Center in 2007. Robert at this time began an extensive drug and alcohol inpatient program and resided in the GOALS (Gaining Occupational And Life Skills) Homeless Vets Program for about 1 year.
In April of 2010, Robert heard about the programs at Horizon Goodwill Industries and began services with us at our Work Opportunities Center in Martinsburg. During his 8 weeks of Work Experience Training he did exceptionally well. After completing his program, Robert steadily looked for full-time employment opportunities while spending his nights on couches staying with friends.
When we began recruiting for our new Martinsburg custodial contract at the Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms Building, we immediately thought of Robert who we thought would be a great fit. In June of 2011, he submitted his application for the extensive and rigorous clearance process necessary for the position. Robert was approved and hired as a work site supervisor.
According to Robert this job has opened the door to many opportunities. Robert was able to start paying off outstanding student loans, obtain reliable transportation, and he is the first Veteran to be chosen by the Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Panhandle to have a home built in 2013. The foundation for the home began in May 2013 and he received the keys to his new home on June 19, 2013. This is what is referred to as a “Blitz Build.”

From the Habitat for Humanity of the Eastern Panhandle website: Dedication Held for First Veteran’s Blitz Build Home in 2013 Volunteers and friends celebrated the dedication of the first Veteran home of 2013. Homeowner Robert Scott, an Army Veteran of the Gulf War, invested 200 personal hours of sweat equity into the house that was sponsored and constructed by the Hedgesville Church.
Robert says, “Now I am in a position to set goals for myself.” He says he has one final goal to accomplish in life: to open his own restaurant, which has always been his dream.
Here is a pictures of Robert and his newly built home in Martinsburg, WV. Robert is excited about what is yet to come for him and stated, “God is Good.” He has overcome many obstacles, including being homeless, jobless, and having no transportation, and now has all three. Congratulations Robert!
