Coffee is one of life’s simple pleasures I just can’t do without. That’s what was going through my mind Sunday morning as I waited for that delicious, caffeinated wonder to brew, tapping my fingers on the kitchen counter, staring as each excruciating drip fell ever so slowly into my mug. Maybe we should finally purchase one of those super fast brewers that make one cup at a time, but super quick for impatient guys like me—“Yes, of course you can all come for Thanksgiving!” Missy’s excited voice snapped me out of my post sleep haze. I’ve been married a long time, and even without coffee I can immediately read between the lines of her vocal inflections. She was far from thrilled about whatever news she just received. CEO John McCain Shares Horizon Goodwill’s Mission
Horizon Goodwill Industries’ CEO John McCain addressed Washington County business leaders Wednesday, November 4, 2015 during the ongoing Chamber of Commerce breakfast series “Eggs & Issues”.
“The unemployment rate in Washington County is 5.5 percent. The unemployment rate for a person with a disability is nearly twice that at 10.8 percent, so it becomes twice as hard to find a job when you have a disability,” McCain stated.
Mr. McCain proceeded to explain how Horizon Goodwill focuses on providing a variety of job training programs for area residents who face barriers to employment. “We’re in the service business, and the idea behind service, you focus on what you can do for someone, not what you can’t do for someone because you have this background, because you have this barrier. These are things that are open to you. Let’s work on getting those things and gettin you to where you can be.”

90% of proceeds from all items donated that are sold at Horizon Goodwill’s local thrift stores goes towards funding these greatly needed job training programs.

Why Pay Retail For Your Halloween Costume?
It sounded like a good idea when my wife proposed we host a Halloween party. After all, I love Halloween—the scary movies, all the neighborhood kids in those adorable costumes and of course raiding my daughter’s candy stash over the following week.
I’ve discovered there’s an actual art to the negotiation of convincing an eight year old to share their hard-earned treats. What works best for me is something along the lines of “Kaitlyn, you really don’t want those nasty wafer things, do you? You know how they make those, right? The Case Of The Vanishing Clothes
By this point you know I’m a big fan of Halloween—spooky movies, kids in costumes trick or treating, the chilly fall air. Yes, I really enjoy the whole scary vibe! It wasn’t always so easy for me to get into the Halloween spirit, but last year, thanks to my daughter Kaitlyn and yes, Horizon Goodwill, I found myself really inspired. The best thing about Halloween to me is that I always try to come up with unique ways to scare my wife. Honestly, over the years it’s become too easy, but I still get to laugh at her for believing in ghosts. But recently, I found myself starting to waiver in my disbelief. Dress 2 Impress!
We can all agree that going to an interview can be stressful. You need to feel and look your best and have your confidence high. One way Goodwill helps the graduates of our job readiness programs is to help them learn how to dress for an interview. We also can provide business clothing for them to wear to that interview if they are in need.
Individuals who have been out of the workplace for for a while may not have the means to have a suit for their first interview. The clothes we provide give them a hand up to succeed. The Dress 2 Impress Career Closet is one way that we assist them. These outfits help make them feel better about themselves so that their skills and abilities shine through.
We greatly appreciate the donation of business wear for both men and women to help our graduates succeed. If you would like to make a specific donation to the Dress 2 Impress Career Closet, please call 1-800-435-2480 and we will make arrangements for you to drop your generous donation at the location nearest you.
