March 2023 Newsletter
Welcome to the Horizon Goodwill Industries company newsletter.
Our Mission is: Removing Barriers, Creating Opportunities.
March 2023 Vol. 1, Edition 9
Is it Equal, Equitable, or Just???
You may recall that in February, I highlighted our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). This month, I’d like to explore the meanings behind three words you often hear associated with DEI:
- Equality means each individual is given the same resources and opportunities, regardless of their circumstances. In some cases, equality can actually increase inequities in communities as not every group of people needs the same resources or opportunities allocated to them in order to thrive. The concept of equality is based on everyone having access to the same resources; therefore, they are treated “equally.” While this sounds great in concept, the image above highlights how providing everyone identical support does not always address the problem.
- Equity recognizes each person has different circumstances and needs, meaning different groups of people need different resources and opportunities allocated to them in order to thrive. In an equitable solution, resources are provided based on the individual need or circumstance. As shown in the image above, in order to achieve equity, those who are experiencing greater barriers receive more support or resources while others receive less.
- Justice advances equity one step further by identifying and removing the barrier itself. As seen in the final image, solutions that are just become sustainable over time because they no longer require an investment of additional resources in order for everyone to have equal access.
You may recall that our mission at HGI is “removing barriers, creating opportunities.” While we are not perfect, we strive to center equity and justice in everything we do. I encourage each of you to consider how your actions may contribute towards these ideals. If you ever have suggestions on how we can be better, please do not hesitate to let me know!
With hope, Dave
New Vice President of Mission Advancement: Nick Kline!
HGI recently named Nick Kline as the new Vice President of Mission Advancement.
Nick brings over 15 years of marketing and strategic development experience to the organization. In his new role, he will provide strategic leadership for all fundraising, marketing, public relations, communication, legislative advocacy, and community engagement activities of the organization.
“I deeply admire the mission and work that Horizon Goodwill is doing in our community, and I’m honored to be a part of that now,” Kline said.
Prior to co-founding Wimbly Stoke, a strategic marketing agency based out of Frederick, Nick was the Director of Technology at High Rock.
“I’ve spent the past few years helping nonprofit and for-profit organizations define their purpose and translate that to long-term strategic objectives. It’s been incredibly fulfilling work, and I’m excited to bring that experience to HGI. Mostly though, I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside this amazing team of people doing really meaningful work.”
So what does a “VP of Mission Advancement” do?
- Play a strategic role in designing and leading brand and development strategies.
- Build relationships across our territory in support of mission activities.
- Ensure effectiveness and efficiencies that result in agency profitability;
- Drive organizational capacity development by translating Horizon Goodwill’s strategic vision into a sound operational plan.
In short, ‘Advancing the Mission’! When you meet Nick, give him a big HGI Welcome!
YOU are making a difference in the lives of many people. It’s the beginning of a new year, but here is your impact through January 2023:
Employee Spotlight: Gary Lewis!
Gary has come a long way in life. Born as a twin to a little girl, he had many medical challenges. Gary was unable to walk. He was placed in Rosewood Institution, and Gary stayed there until he was 14 coming out able to walk. Placed in group homes all his life, he worked as a janitor at Mcdonald’s, Pantry Pride, and Peoples Drug store.
Being a Client of The Arc of Frederick County, Gary was recommended to apply for a job with Horizon Goodwill. Gary became an employee in October 2007. He will tell everyone he loves his job and is unafraid to work. Unfortunately, Gary was laid off when the contract was cut; when things started to pick up, we called Gary to see if he wanted to return to work. There was no hesitation; he came back. Gary may not work as fast as other employees and doesn’t always stay on track. He does his best to complete all his tasks.
Gary lives on his own now with the support of The Arc of Frederick County. He loves his 49ers and can always make you laugh. It doesn’t matter what you say to him; he will have a witty comeback. We are glad to have him back because he puts smiles on everyone’s faces.
Spring Cleaning Fuels the Goodwill Engine
It’s spring, so that means it’s time to do a little spring cleaning! At HGI (and all the other Goodwill Organizations), we all know that we rely on people bringing their donations to our facilities so we can resell them to help pay for our Mission Services. While we tend to look at outside people as donors, but even our employees can be a great source of donations. Here are some helpful hints for those of you that would like to tackle decluttering:
Top Decluttering Tips For Your Home: Room-by-Room Checklist:
The first rule of decluttering is: Don’t try to tackle everything all at once. Organizing and decluttering can give you a huge sense of accomplishment, but if you try to take on too much, you’ll just get overwhelmed.
Instead, break up your decluttering mission by room. Then break it down even further. Go one cabinet, drawer, or shelf at a time. This is especially true if you have a lot of stuff in your house that needs to be donated, thrown out, or reorganized. If you focus on one small section of your home at a time, you’ll have a clear organization plan and ultimately accomplish more.
- The Bathroom: The bathroom is often overlooked when organizing, but it can easily start overflowing with expired, old products. It may be time to reevaluate if your bathroom is full of forgotten skincare serums, unused Bath & Body Works gift sets, or foundations that aren’t quite your shade.
- The Bedroom: Your bedroom should be your “zen” space. But all too often, it becomes a dumping ground for piles of laundry, empty water cups, and the artwork you’ve meant to hang up for months (or even years). You don’t need to be overwhelmed by the mess — start one step at a time.
- The Closet and Clothing: For many people, clothing is the largest source of clutter in the home. An overabundance of clothing can not only overfill your closet and drawers but also spill into other aspects of your life. It makes doing laundry, keeping your space organized, and just choosing outfits each morning more stressful than necessary.
- The Kitchen: Although every room in your home needs to work for you, the functionality of your kitchen may be the most important. Who wants to cook in a disorganized, overflowing mess of a kitchen? Once you declutter your kitchen, you’ll be excited to make delicious, home-cooked meals again.
- The Living Room: The living room is the focal point of your home. When you have guests over, it’s almost guaranteed that they will spend time in the living room. But you want to enjoy the space, too. That’s why you should use your living room to highlight the items you love the most and store away items you don’t want to look at. You’ll enjoy relaxing in your living room more, and your display items can serve as awesome conversation starters.
For more information about decluttering your home, read this recent article from our guest author: Faith Wakefield, for Today’s Homeowner.
Interviews Are Taking Place!
We are currently interviewing candidates for the Vice President of People and Culture. The selected person will lead the development, implementation, and management of effective human resource strategies. They’ll establish an organizational culture built on caring, inclusivity, growth, and accountability while advancing the economic sustainability of the communities we serve. They will also lead the implementation of HGI’s diversity, equity, and inclusion plan. This person will also collaborate with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to attract, motivate, develop, and retain an outstanding workforce to support organizational growth. We’re hoping to bring on someone very soon!

February 2023 Vol. 1, Edition 8
Did you know HGI is committed to DEI?
What is “DEI” anyway?
DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. It refers to creating a workplace culture that values and respects differences among employees (Diversity), promotes fairness and equal access to opportunities and resources (Equity), and ensures that everyone feels valued, included, and able to succeed (Inclusion).
What is our commitment?
Our DEI Commitment is about creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and valued, regardless of their race, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, age, or any other characteristic that makes them unique. It fosters a culture of understanding, where employees are encouraged to share their experiences and perspectives and all voices are heard and valued.
The values and importance of DEI are central to our mission and also reach far beyond our walls and daily work at HGI. Martin Luther King, Jr. pointed out that:
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
Our success is connected to each other and this is why we made a specific commitment to advancing DEI in our work. We acknowledge that this work can be difficult at times and strongly believe that it is critical to making the world a better and just place for all to thrive.
With hope, Dave
The Hagerstown Health Hub is now open!
On-site Primary Care is now available at the new Hagerstown Health Hub. This office is now open at the HGI2 facility at 200 North Prospect St., Hagerstown, MD. The new offices are finished, and Meritus staff are on hand to help with many services, including COVID and Flu Shots and Blood Pressure or Diabetes screenings. There are also monthly educational classes, and Care Coordination and Health Navigation are also available.
Any Washington County resident who would establish a primary care relationship is eligible for these services. Insured and uninsured residents will be connected with a Health Insurance Navigator to help with establishing some coverage. Horizon Goodwill Industries employees are welcome to use these services as well. The Hagerstown Health Hub is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 8 AM – 3 PM.
YOU are making a difference in the lives of many people. It’s the beginning of a new year, but here is your impact through January 2023:
Meet Danny Shoemaker
Danny works for the Custodial Department of Business Services. He started at Horizon Goodwill on January 9, 2018, and works at the Sideling Hill Rest Area.
At age 29, Danny found himself addicted to prescription drugs. Like many in this situation, the pills that seemed to help initially eventually took over and ran his life for six years. At the age of 35, Danny knew he needed to make a change before the situation became irreversible. Danny found the strength within to quit the pills on his own with no outside help and has been clean since.
Thinking his tough times in life were over, Danny was confronted with another seemingly insurmountable challenge. His daughter was driving, and there was a severe accident in which 2 of her close friends lost their lives. His daughter was sentenced to 3 yrs. for this tragic mistake. Danny struggled every day for 2 yrs. waiting for his daughter’s sentencing. His job and work friends at Sidling Hill helped to keep his mind off the situation and gave him people to talk to about what he was going through. Their support was invaluable. It felt good to have friends to talk to about what he was dealing with. Without the sustainable, meaningful employment opportunity this contract provides, it is hard to know if Danny would have the strength to avoid a relapse or worse.
Danny has overcome a lot in his life and is a great asset to Goodwill and the EWP program. He is a hard worker and has a caring and funny personality. With all of Danny’s struggles that he has gone through in his life, he never let them stop him from trying to improve his life. He has a lot of willpower and strength to not turn back to pills, and it is comforting to know that his employment opportunity plays an ongoing role in that success.
When not working, he enjoys time with his dog, Ellie May, and cats Norbit, Curious, Bandit, Crack Doodle, Momma, Malo, Frosty, and Olly Bear. He also enjoys sitting on his deck and having cookouts with friends.
Dell Reconnect — Technology Recycling with Goodwill®
In 2004, Dell joined together with Goodwill® Industries to create the Dell Reconnect program. Consumers can drop off their used computer equipment at one of the 2,000+ participating Goodwill locations in 44 states in the US to be responsibly recycled for free. The trained staff throughout our Goodwill partners will sort and process the equipment to be picked up and recycled by Dell. The Dell Reconnect program not only helps create jobs in the community for people with disabilities and disadvantages but also helps foster the circular economy: it replaces the ‘end-of-life’ concept with restoration and aims to eliminate waste. Plastics and gold collected will be recycled into new computer parts through Dell’s closed-loop recycling process.
Dell Reconnect accepts any brand of computer equipment in any condition. This includes Computers, Monitors, Printers, Scanners, Hard Drives, Keyboards, Mice, Speakers, and Cables. To learn more, click here.

Happy New Year, Horizon Goodwill Employees!
“What the new year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the new year.” – Vern McLellan
As we start fresh in 2023, I am excited to see what the new year will bring. While there will always be challenges ahead, I have no doubt that we will continue to work together and support one another as we move forward.
In the coming year, we will continue to focus on helping individuals obtain equitable access to meaningful employment. We will also be exploring new opportunities to grow and expand our reach, and I am confident that with your hard work and dedication, we will be able to achieve great things.
I invite you to bring:
PASSION for our purpose
CHARACTER worthy of trust
COMPASSION and empathy
SERVICE to others
CELEBRATION of success
to everything you do this year.
I want to thank each and every one of you for your contributions to Horizon Goodwill. Your commitment to our mission and to one another is what makes our organization a special place to work. Here’s to a successful and fulfilling year ahead!

Elizabeth Shoemaker:
One of the individuals that work at the North Warehouse is Lizzie Shoemaker. Lizzie came through Mission services as a client and is now for HGI as a Core Employee.
“So, in August of 2022, I lived with my family. We lived in the downtown area for about eight years,” she explains. “The landlord and his wife were getting divorced, and they decided to sell the house we were living in — a duplex. And it was sprung on us at the last minute.” With three little brothers ready to go back to school, Elizabeth, who goes by Lizzie, knew her mother was in a bad situation. “I remember I came home from the library one day, and mom’s like, we need to have a conversation,” she said. “And she’s just like; I have to worry about getting a place so the boys can start school.” The goal was to get something for all of them, but Lizzie knew her brothers had to be the top priority. “And there was nothing wrong with that, you know because it was right before school started. And I didn’t know what to do,” she said. Read her full story here.
YOU are making a difference in the lives of many people. Here is your impact through November 2022:
One of the things that many people don’t know about the Business Services Department is that they have a facility at Corporate Center called the North Warehouse.
The North Warehouse’s largest customer, Ceramcor, will close out 2022 ahead of last year by approximately 20%, breaking all previous records for orders shipped. Twice as many items [pallets] are being warehoused than any other year, and Customer Service involvement exploded by 50%. The North Warehouse is located at the Corporate Center in Hagerstown, MD. One of the projects that were just completed is the annual “monster” calendar project that we process for HBP (local printing company), which employed 17 different individuals, and concluded in December.
One of the individuals that work at the North Warehouse is Lizzie Shoemaker. Lizzie came through Mission services as a client and is now for HGI as a Core Employee. Her story is above in the Mission section.
Last month, an announcement was made about the change in the jobs of Chris Glasse, Lance Crossman, and Angie Engle. This month we’ll go into a little more information regarding Lance and Angie since their jobs are related to Donated Goods & Retail, also known in the Goodwill World as DGR.
Lance Crossman is now the Director of Donated Goods & Retail (DGR)
By aligning DGR (the team can work closely together to streamline collaboration and cooperation throughout the departments. Retail, as we all know it, will now include the support functions like Transportation, Donated Goods, Donor Acquisition, and E-COMMERCE. Working together as one team, the Retail division will focus on moving towards common goals. We are in the process of performing a territory assessment in partnership with Goodwill Manasota. The territory assessment will provide critical information needed to drive our Retail operations forward. We are excited about the new possibilities this alignment opens up and look forward to working closely with each store to empower and support all locations!
Angie Engle is the Associate Director of Donation Acquisition
Angie will work collaboratively with the DGR team and others within the organization to support existing donation acquisition strategies. She will also be responsible for identifying and establishing new donation streams, business opportunities, and interagency partnerships, focusing on making HGI the most convenient and preferred recipient for community donations. She’ll use territory demographic and donation data to identify, develop, and implement strategies to generate new donations. As the Associate Director of Donation Acquisition, she’ll support and grow the existing donation streams, including retail stores, attended donation centers, unattended donation bins, events, and home/business pickups. She’ll also track donations across all methods and work to improve data collection methods continuously.
