We can all agree that going to an interview can be stressful. You need to feel and look your best and have your confidence high. One way Goodwill helps the graduates of our job readiness programs is to help them learn how to dress for an interview. We also can provide business clothing for them to wear to that interview if they are in need.

Individuals who have been out of the workplace for for a while may not have the means to have a suit for their first interview. The clothes we provide give them a hand up to succeed. The Dress 2 Impress Career Closet is one way that we assist them. These outfits help make them feel better about themselves so that  their skills and abilities shine through.

The Weather’s Getting Brisk—Does Your Coat Still Fit?

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 12.53.43 PMHey everyone! I’ve got some really great news I just couldn’t wait to share with all the Horizon Goodwill faithful. I got up Monday morning and, as I’m sure many of you also have to do on a regular basis, I needed to move my wife’s car out of the driveway so I could get mine out. I didn’t want to be late and I’m sure my employer wouldn’t want to hear that I forgot to perform the vehicle tango the night prior.  Anyway, throw on my shoes, grab both sets of car keys and head out the door—only to be slammed with some downright frigid weather!  Ok, maybe it wasn’t exactly “frigid”, but it was really cold out and I wasn’t expecting that. In my defense, there was frost on both vehicles, so I knew I wasn’t coming down with the flu.

I moved Missy’s car onto the street, pulled mine out, then pulled her’s back in. Even with all this activity I was still cold and decided it wouldn’t be the worst idea to go inside and pull my Fall jacket out of mothballs.  There it was, right where I left it last October, waiting for me like an old friend in the corner at a high school reunion. I grabbed the coat and proceed to put it on while exiting the house, but realized immediately it didn’t fit. I know what you’re thinking; “John must have put on some weight since last year”—but guess again! It was too large! I was stunned…what could this mean? Back To School Is A Great Time To Get Organized

Hey Readers! Summer’s not officially over yet, but it might as well be at my house. School’s back in session and the Mrs. and I are attempting to get Kaitlyn back on schedule—no easy task for a third grade girl who’s been playing from sunup to sundown for three months! Add to this the fact that one of our adult children, Connor, has decided to come and visit from Pittsburgh “indefinitely” and suddenly our three person household is now four…plus his dog Marshall.  We’re running out of space, but, as always, my wife had a plan. Simply amazing. There’s really no other way to describe the incredible success of the ongoing Horizon Goodwill/Bon-Ton Sales Event. I recently spoke with Horizon Goodwill’s Manager of Marketing & Community Relations Deb Carbaugh and she wanted me to convey her appreciation to everyone who has stopped by with their donations, receiving a very special discount for new Bon-Ton merchandise. As regular readers of this blog, you know I’m a very curious guy. This conversation with Deb led me to do a little digging involving how the clothing donated at the Bon-Ton really impacts our local communities, and what I found is very impressive, to say the least! As if the inclement weather isn’t enough to just ruin your day, you’ve just received your W-2 forms from your employer. Yes….Tax Time is here once again. Maybe some of you actually look forward to this time of year, anxious and eager to gather last year’s records, sharpen your Number 2 pencils, blow dust off that adding machine you’ve had since 1992 and get started with the number crunching.

For most of us, however, it’s a painful chore to itemize deductions, download Turbo Tax or schedule an appointment with H& R Block, only to discover you owe the IRS even more of your hard-earned dough.
