By this point you know I’m a big fan of Halloween—spooky movies, kids in costumes trick or treating, the chilly fall air. Yes, I really enjoy the whole scary vibe! It wasn’t always so easy for me to get into the Halloween spirit, but last year, thanks to my daughter Kaitlyn and yes, Horizon Goodwill, I found myself really inspired. The best thing about Halloween to me is that I always try to come up with unique ways to scare my wife. Parrotheads Help Spread The Word About Horizon Goodwill

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I don’t consider myself a “Parrothead”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Jimmy Buffet is a nice guy, and there’s no doubt he’s talented; it’s just his beach flavored, feel good music has never appealed to me. I know I’m in the minority here, and I’m ok with that. I will say I do owe Mr. Buffet and The Coral Refer Band a debt of gratitude. Back in 2005 he played PNC Park in Pittsburgh and I tagged along with some friends to see what the whole tailgating experience would be like. It was here that I met my wife. Please, don’t go connecting the dots here, that has nothing to do with why I’m not a big Jimmy Buffet fan. Seriously.

This past Wednesday, my wife and I attended Horizon Goodwill’s 60th Annual Awards Dinner, our first time having just moved to the area from Pittsburgh a little less than a year ago. We were both so moved by the event that I felt compelled to dedicate this week’s blog to our experience, sharing what we learned about this incredible organization, the spirit of community and yes, my disappointment about choosing the wrong week to start my diet. Horizon Goodwill To Hold 60th Annual Awards Dinner

Horizon Goodwill Industries (HGI) will hold its Annual Power of Work Awards Dinner on Wednesday, May 6th at the Fountain Head Country Club in Hagerstown. The event begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner and awards ceremony will follow at 6:15 p.m.

The individuals and organizations being recognized at this event are being singled out for their personal achievements and commitment to the Goodwill mission of helping people in our communities that want to work but experience barriers to employment.

Celebrating Earth Day Might Benefit Me More Than Anyone Else!

I’m that guy, you know the one. For some reason I have a mental block when it comes to remembering special dates, everything from birthdays to anniversaries. I can’t explain it, I’m just missing something in my DNA when it comes to recalling things like that. My wife is just amazed by this, as she’s quick to point out I can recite the entire starting lineup for the 1979 World Series Pittsburgh Pirates, but for some reason, I can’t remember when my daughter was born. I mean, I know her birthday is at the end of January, but that’s one of those tricky months with 31 days in it…or is it 30?

Anyway, I consider myself fortunate when, every April, I turn on the television and see a piece about Earth Day. Yes, I like to think of myself as the type of person that does his part to keep his carbon footprint to a minimum, and I separate my recyclables every week, but I must admit I have an ulterior motive for looking forward to Earth Day. A Fly On The Wall Conversation…You Never Know What You’ll Hear

I like to work from home sometimes, not a lot, but sometimes. With the recent cold weather leading to school closings, my daughter, and all of her classmates for that matter, has been spending more time at home as well. Anyway, last week I was working at my desk and Kaitlyn, my second-grader, was playing with this educational tablet device thing that “Santa” left for her.
