Students at Winter Street Elementary School were the glad recipients of free books to read over the summer, thanks to an effort by Horizon Goodwill and the Hagerstown Lions Club. The Hagerstown Lions Club in partnership with Horizon Goodwill completed a gift book project with Winter Street elementary on Friday, April 22nd. Each Winter Street student could pick two books to keep from more than 875 books provided to the school. John McCain, CEO of Horizon Goodwill, said “Our staff sorted through thousands of donated books to collect as many children’s books as possible. The books were screened for appearance and categorized by reading level by the Lions Club.” Brooks McBurney, service project coordinator for the Hagerstown Lion’s Club, said, “Winter Street was chosen for the distribution because it will be closing at the end of the school year. Young reader literacy is a core mission of Lions International.”
