Why Goodwill?

Thank you for noticing our bin and/or scanning our QR code. We welcome you to this page to explain why donations are so important to our organization. The following paragraphs are a great source of information about Horizon Goodwill Industries.

We know you have many options when donating your clothing, electronics, furniture, and household items. Deciding which organization will use your goods best can be confusing. Goodwill has been a leader in repurposing donations and creating job opportunities for individuals facing challenges to work since its beginnings in the early 1900s. We take pride in ensuring your donations directly benefit the mission and programs we provide to our community.

Horizon Goodwill Industries is one of 155 independent, community-based Goodwills. Horizon Goodwill is headquartered in Hagerstown, MD, and serves communities in 17 counties across MD, PA, WV, and VA. We operate numerous social enterprises and human services programs. We have helped thousands of individuals each year pursue economic mobility through our mission of Removing Barriers to Social Mobility for meaningful and sustainable employment. Through this work, Horizon Goodwill is committed to advancing equitable opportunities for employment and environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

Donations given to our stores and donation centers are processed and sold at our stores. The revenue from those sales will provide several services. In 2022, we helped with housing and employment:

What to Donate?

We accept:

• Clothing and Outerwear
• Accessories
• Linens and Textiles
• Housewares
• Electronics
• Art and Antiques
• Furniture
• Computers
• Books, Records, DVD’s, and CDs
• Sports and Exercise Equipment
• Toys
• Vehicles

We also accept and recycle:

• Plastic wrap
• Cardboard
• Wires
• Broken Computers, Printers, and Accessories

We ask that all items are clean and free of tears, stains, pet hair, and odors.

Items that can’t be sold (torn, stained, broken, etc.) are recycled in several ways. ‘Recycle, Reuse, Reduce, Repurpose, and Reinvest’ is a core tenant of our organization. In 2022 over 12 million pounds of donations were received just by Horizon Goodwill!

Taxes and Donations

Donating to local Goodwill organizations has, and continues to be, a way for people to help others in their community. Goodwill uses the revenue from donated items to create employment placement and job training to contribute to our mission. More than 101 million people in the U.S. and Canada donate to Goodwill, knowing their clothing and household goods will be put to good use.

When you drop off your donations at Goodwill, you’ll receive a receipt from a donation attendant. You can also scan a QR code to reach our electronic donation receipt page. Hang on to this receipt. At the end of the year, if you itemize deductions on your taxes, you can claim a tax deduction for clothing and household items in good condition.
