As we enter a new year, Horizon Goodwill Industries is excited to share a significant development that reflects o
ur commitment to growth and positive impact. Over the past year, our senior leadership and board of directors engaged in a thorough review of our foundational elements, leading to a thoughtful evolution of our Mission Statement, Vision Statement, and Values.
Our previous statements were mission statements: ‘Removing Barriers, Creating Opportunities. Vision Statement: ‘Helping people realize and achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work. Our Values included “Passion, Character, Celebration, Service, and Compassion.”
The Evolution Process:
After careful consideration and extensive discussions, we embarked on a journey to redefine how we perceive our work, how the public observes us in action, and how our clients and employees engage with our mission.
Introducing Our Renewed Approach:
New for 2024, we are thrilled to unveil our updated Vision, Mission, Purpose & Values. This poster encapsulates the essence of our renewed commitment to positively impacting individuals and communities.

Horizon Goodwill’s Mobile Outreach: Empowering Underserved Communities
In October 2023, we held a ribbon cutting was held for Horizon Goodwill’s Mobile Van. Horizon Goodwill Industries is launching a groundbreaking mobile outreach program to extend its services beyond Hagerstown. This initiative targets housing, unemployment, and healthcare access in underserved areas. The primary focus of this initiative is to assist the homeless and those at risk of eviction in finding stable housing. The mobile outreach van will also play a crucial role in generating employment opportunities for the unemployed and providing healthcare services, including both medical and mental health support.
Sharnae Deshields, the HGI Outreach Coordinator, highlighted the significance of reaching communities with limited access to essential resources. “We are meeting people where they are in the community. This mobile van allows us to go on the outskirts of the community where people have less access to the resources that we offer in the city,” Deshields explained.
What sets this program apart is its comprehensive approach. The mobile vehicle is not only a means of transportation for those in need but also a hub for accessing social services. Case managers on board will actively assist individuals in securing the support they require.
Hagerstown Mayor Takesha Martinez emphasized the practicality of the outreach van. “If you need a computer to apply for food stamps, you can do that on this mobile unit,” Martinez stated. This highlights the van’s role not only in providing immediate assistance but also in facilitating essential administrative tasks, such as job applications or Medicare forms.
The initiative received a significant boost through a grant from the Maryland Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services. Collaboration with the Hagerstown Department of Community and Economic Development also played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life.
By taking services directly to the heart of underserved communities, Horizon Goodwill Industries is making a tangible impact on the lives of those who need it most. This mobile outreach is a testament to the organization’s commitment to fostering positive change and creating opportunities for individuals facing housing instability, unemployment, and limited access to healthcare. As the mobile van hits the road, it promises empowerment, support, and a brighter future for communities on the outskirts of Hagerstown.

This distinctive store goes beyond the traditional thrift model, offering a curated selection of antiques, home decor, designer shoes, accessories, and more. Every purchase and donation at / re•find / supports Horizon Goodwill’s mission services, creating a positive impact on communities.
Horizon Goodwill Industries, headquartered in Hagerstown, MD, is a forward-thinking nonprofit workforce development organization. With a mission to remove barriers to social mobility, HGI serves communities across 17 counties in MD, PA, WV, and VA.
