Seriously. Labor Day is Monday. It just doesn’t seem possible! No joke, it feels like Valentine’s Day was just a month ago and Father’s Day, my absolute favorite holiday, took place just last week. What is happening to the concept of time? Am I the only one that can’t fathom the fact that in just the blink of an eye I’m going to be passing out Halloween candy, shoveling snow and thinking Spring all over again? One good thing about Labor Day, in addition to cookouts (with meat this year, not Veggie Burgers, right Missy?) and not being forced to get up at 6:00 am for work is the fact that, well, I have a job.
This wasn’t always the case, however, and I can sympathize greatly with those seeking gainful employment. There are many reasons I’m such a big fan of Horizon Goodwill, but without a doubt, to me, what makes this organization so special is their dedication to helping those with barriers to employment find work. Do me a little favor this holiday weekend, and think about how much you value your career. If you could, wouldn’t you help others gain the same security you have? Well, guess what, you can…and it’s easier than you might think.
Donating To Horizon Goodwill Does Have A Positive Impact On Your Community
I’ve mentioned this so many times in previous articles, but it’s definitely worth noting again. We, you, me, all of us can definitely help others on their journey to gainful employment. It doesn’t require us writing a check. It doesn’t mean we have to give up our valuable time. In fact, in a roundabout way, it’s actually a win-win type of scenario.
We all have household goods, clothing, books, records and movies that we simply don’t use any longer. All too often, when the times come to update our furniture or clean out our bookcase the first inclination is to drag the “old” stuff out to the curb for Otto the trash collector. That sofa that clashes with your living room curtains is in excellent shape, but still, unfortunately will end up in a landfill. Why? Gather those items and donate them to your local Horizon Goodwill. You don’t have to wait until you have a full war chest of items to donate. Just bring in what you no longer use or need. I guarantee all of us have items that are simply taking up valuable space. Donate these goods, don’t just place them in the trash and go about your day.
I know, I can hear the collective audience right now saying “Yeah, but John, it’s such a hassle bringing all of that stuff into Horizon Goodwill, it’s easier just to put things out with the trash. I mean, I’d like to help, but, well, you know…” Ok, I can appreciate what you’re trying to convey, but what would you rather be responsible for: more unnecessary refuse ending up in your local landfill or empowering residents to receive the job training they need to become financially independent?
Let me explain this in a bit more detail.
Approximately 90% Of All Sales From Horizon Goodwill Stores Goes To Fund JobTraining Programs
Yes, it does cost money to fund the amazing job training programs Horizon Goodwill offers, and, as my father used to always tell me “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” In order to continually teach, educate and provide the skills employers are looking for, Horizon Goodwill counts on the sales generated from items donated from community members JUST LIKE YOU! Sorry, I wasn’t yelling there, but I feel the need to emphasis the fact that you can make a difference in your community.
“But John, I would love to donate, but I honestly don’t have anything worth bringing in.” Ok, I’m picking up what you’re laying down, but you can still help. When was the last time you visited a Horizon Goodwill store? Did you have any idea how vast the range of products offered for sale really is? Need a coffee maker, George Foreman Grill or deep fryer? Check out what Horizon Goodwill has first before paying full price at that flashy electronics store. Looking for that just right pair of shoes to go with that white summer dress that, you know you’ll have to wear before Labor Day, right? Stop in and be amazed at the selection available.
Remember, nearly 90% of everything purchased helps Horizon Goodwill continue to provide training for your friends and neighbors, skills that will help them succeed in their search for employment.
So, before you throw those hot dogs and burgers on the grill this Labor Day, lamenting your return to work the following day, remember this—there are so many job candidates out there who envy you. Do them a solid, donate and purchase from Horizon Goodwill.
