2023 Mission Partner of the Year: Justice & Recovery Advocates
Since the inception of Wolf’s Place, Justice & Recovery Advocates has been an invaluable asset, offering unwavering support and guidance to program participants on their journey toward recovery and reentry. Their dedication and commitment to helping individuals rebuild their lives have earned them the prestigious 2023 Mission Partner of the Year title.

Twice weekly, Justice & Recovery Advocates lead engaging group sessions that cover a broad spectrum of topics, from mindfulness to nutrition. These sessions are designed to equip members with essential coping strategies, including anger management techniques, helping them navigate the complexities of their recovery journey. The holistic approach adopted by Justice & Recovery Advocates ensures that participants gain the knowledge and skills necessary for sustainable recovery.

2023 Employer Of The Year: Village Caregiving
In a harmonious partnership with our Case Managers, Village Caregiving has emerged as a pillar of support, facilitating seamless transitions into employment for program participants. Their unwavering dedication to our mission has yielded tangible results, with 13 individuals successfully hired.
Removing Barriers to Employment
Recognizing transportation as a potential obstacle, Village Caregiving goes the extra mile by conducting interviews at our resource center, ensuring accessibility for all. This thoughtful approach eliminates a significant barrier, making the job application process smoother and more convenient for participants. Additionally, Village Caregiving’s assistance extends beyond recruitment; they actively guide participants through onboarding, smoothing the path to employment.
Community Engagement and Empowerment
Village Caregiving’s involvement in our Cut Cloth Work Events exemplifies its commitment to fostering community and empowerment among participants. 2023 Young Adult Achiever of the Year: Shawn Graber
Shawn Graber’s journey is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of holistic support. Initially seeking assistance at the Young Adult Solution Center, Shawn’s path led him through our Solution Center and Young Adult Shelter before finding his stride at Wolf’s Place. His story is one of perseverance and unwavering determination.
Overcoming Significant Challenges
Despite facing significant challenges, including struggles at home and involvement with alcohol that led to incarceration, Shawn’s determination remained unshakable. Upon becoming a resident of Wolf’s Place, he embraced the opportunity for growth and renewal. This environment gave him the stability and support to turn his life around.
Academic and Personal Achievements
Through unwavering dedication and hard work, Shawn earned his high school diploma and, remarkably, secured a full-ride scholarship to Hood College. Now a freshman at Hood College, Shawn’s future is bright. His academic achievements and personal growth shine as an example of triumph over adversity.

Amidst challenges and setbacks, Robert Cosner’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination. Starting at the Temp Labor Job Training Program at the Cumberland UPIP warehouse, Robert embarked on a path marked by perseverance and growth, overcoming significant obstacles.
Overcoming Sobriety and Legal Challenges
Struggling with sobriety and court-ordered obligations, including regular attendance at drug court, transportation limitations, and financial hardships, Robert’s road ahead seemed daunting. However, with unwavering resolve, Robert embraced the opportunity for change. His commitment to turning his life around was evident as he determinedly navigated these challenges.
Excelling Through Hard Work
Through dedication and hard work, Robert excelled in his roles, demonstrating a commendable commitment to staying on task and contributing positively to his workplace. His persistence paid off when he transitioned to employment at Penn Mar Recycling, securing a core position after completing the Western Maryland Consortium program. This achievement marked a significant milestone in his journey, showcasing his ability to thrive despite his difficulties.

Despite the obstacles, Robert never wavered. He attended Cut/Cloth and Work events, remained steadfast in his sobriety journey, and completed all drug court requirements. 2023 Chuck Robinette Spirit of Goodwill: Marcus Allen
In the face of adversity, Marcus Allen’s resilience shines brightly, exemplifying the spirit of perseverance. In the summer of 2023, after experiencing a reduction in hours and subsequent unemployment from their previous job, Marcus refused to be deterred. For months, Marcus navigated the challenges of unemployment until finding a beacon of hope at Horizon Goodwill Industries’ (HGI) corporate warehouse.
A Pivotal Moment
Attending HGI’s Cut, Cloth, Work event proved pivotal for Marcus, leading to their current position at the warehouse. With the support of HGI, Marcus received invaluable interview assistance, which bolstered their confidence and secured the job opportunity. This event marked a turning point, enabling Marcus to rebuild their career and regain stability.
Dedication to Growth and Community
Marcus’s dedication to personal growth and community engagement has been unwavering throughout their journey. From working on various contracts to actively participating in community-based activities, Marcus has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing their independence and contributing positively to society. 2023 Business Partner Of The Year: Bowman Hospitality
Since September 2017, Horizon Goodwill has forged a dynamic partnership with Bowman Development, catalyzing significant growth and opportunity. What began with cleaning services for a single suite at the Bowman Business Park expanded in spring 2019 to include additional locations, enriching employment prospects for Horizon Goodwill’s custodial crew.
Expanding Opportunities
In May 2022, Horizon Goodwill furthered its collaboration by joining forces with Bowman Hospitality, a division of Bowman Development. This alliance led to the provision of custodial services for common areas at 28 South and neighboring buildings, with subsequent expansions in July 2022 to include the Walker House and more structures, ultimately employing six individuals. This expansion underscores the strength and potential of the partnership, providing steady employment and growth opportunities for Horizon Goodwill’s workforce.

2023 Achiever of the Year: Jordan Smith
Since joining Goodwill in August 2011 as a custodian at the ATF in Martinsburg, WV, Jordan Smith’s journey has been one of resilience and growth. His mother introduced him to the position and recognized its potential fit for him. Jordan has excelled in his role and has become a valued mentor and trainer for the second shift.
Overcoming Early Challenges
Despite facing early challenges due to learning disabilities, Jordan’s determination to succeed propelled him forward. High school intervention programs, including the therapeutic learning program (NILD), provided him invaluable support and guidance. Through dedicated effort and the encouragement of exceptional educators, Jordan discovered his true strengths and found renewed confidence in his abilities.
A Role Model and Mentor
Today, Jordan’s work ethic and dedication are evident in his contributions to Goodwill. His role as a mentor and trainer for new hires on the second shift highlights his leadership qualities and his commitment to helping others succeed. His willingness to share knowledge and support his colleagues fosters a positive and collaborative work environment.
