The Best Gift You Can Give This Holiday Season
Let’s be totally, completely, unashamedly honest with each other, ok? We love to get gifts! Notice I said “we”? I’m talking about each and every one of us, no exceptions. I know I’m not alone when it comes to enjoying the thrill of ripping open wrapping paper, yanking out all that decorative tissue stuff (really, what’s that all about?) and feasting my eyes on…a pair of socks…or a tie…or, worse yet, the dreaded sweater. Honestly, I’m still a little kid inside, and any gift I receive that can be worn, folded or hung in a closet is kind of a bummer.
But I digress—just the act of opening a gift can change your chemical makeup, even just for an instant. The whole mystery of what’s in the box never gets old! That’s just one of the reasons why I love this time of year! Before you get the image that I’m selfish, you should know I love giving gifts, too! Coffee is one of life’s simple pleasures I just can’t do without. That’s what was going through my mind Sunday morning as I waited for that delicious, caffeinated wonder to brew, tapping my fingers on the kitchen counter, staring as each excruciating drip fell ever so slowly into my mug. Maybe we should finally purchase one of those super fast brewers that make one cup at a time, but super quick for impatient guys like me—“Yes, of course you can all come for Thanksgiving!” Missy’s excited voice snapped me out of my post sleep haze. I’ve been married a long time, and even without coffee I can immediately read between the lines of her vocal inflections. She was far from thrilled about whatever news she just received. The Weather’s Getting Brisk—Does Your Coat Still Fit?
Hey everyone! I’ve got some really great news I just couldn’t wait to share with all the Horizon Goodwill faithful. I got up Monday morning and, as I’m sure many of you also have to do on a regular basis, I needed to move my wife’s car out of the driveway so I could get mine out. I didn’t want to be late and I’m sure my employer wouldn’t want to hear that I forgot to perform the vehicle tango the night prior. Anyway, throw on my shoes, grab both sets of car keys and head out the door—only to be slammed with some downright frigid weather! Ok, maybe it wasn’t exactly “frigid”, but it was really cold out and I wasn’t expecting that. In my defense, there was frost on both vehicles, so I knew I wasn’t coming down with the flu.
I moved Missy’s car onto the street, pulled mine out, then pulled her’s back in. Even with all this activity I was still cold and decided it wouldn’t be the worst idea to go inside and pull my Fall jacket out of mothballs. There it was, right where I left it last October, waiting for me like an old friend in the corner at a high school reunion. I grabbed the coat and proceed to put it on while exiting the house, but realized immediately it didn’t fit. I know what you’re thinking; “John must have put on some weight since last year”—but guess again! It was too large! I was stunned…what could this mean?
