Charles Town, named for Charles Washington, youngest brother of President George Washington, is the county seat of Jefferson County. James and Dolly Madison were married just outside Charles Town, and abolitionist John Brown was tried and hanged in Charles Town for the raid on nearby Harper’s Ferry.
